Open Intercounties 2003

Kent took a side to Reading on Sunday 28th September that included several inexperienced players. The side played magnificently and were in with a shout at winning the title after triumphing in their first three matches. They beat the talent laden Oxford side 4 - 3 in the first match. The Oxford side boasted 5 current internationals and a national champion, but wins from Chris Saville, Tim Hayes, Mike Callanan and Doug Phillips saw them home. Second up were Hants who were comprehensively beaten 5 - 2, Chris Saville, Tim Hayes, Peter Sainsbury, Keith Symes and Doug Phillips providing the wins. A narrow 4 - 3 win followed against Surrey, Chris Saville, Tim Hayes, Peter Sainsbury and Mike Callanan providing the wins.

The last match was against Berkshire, who had faired poorly up to then, but they played magnificently to win 6 - 1. Chris Saville, Vinny Mitchell and Mike Callanan all had to sit and watch their opponents open up with unassailable breaks. Tim Hayes and Keith Symes had to watch unassailable replies to their opening breaks. The only winner was Peter Sainsbury. This meant that the Kent side came third behind Oxford and Berkshire.
